2025 Session 1- Wednesday Hand Building with Colored Clay and Nerikomi

Explore the exciting world of hand building and colored clay techniques in this 6-week course at Brick and Mortar Studios. Designed for all skill levels, this class will focus on the Japanese decorative technique of nerikomi, where layers of colored clay are stacked, sliced, and reassembled to create intricate patterns and designs. You'll learn the basics of hand building, including pinch, coil, and slab methods, while incorporating colored clay into your work.

The first class will meet on Wednesday, January 8th 6-8:30pm and the last class will meet on Wednesday, February 12th.

No previous experience is necessary; just bring your creativity and enthusiasm!

This class includes:

  • 15 LBS of clay and the ability to purchase more

  • materials to color and tint clay

  • Firing of your pottery in our electric kilns

  • Glazes and decorating materials

  • Use of studio tools and equipment

  • A storage space to keep your work, personal tools and clay on

  • Access to Open Studio Hours Saturday and Sunday 12pm-4pm

  • Students will also be given our “artist phone number” to call in and see if they are able to get extra studio time outside of open studio hours.

  • 6 In-person class sessions that will meet weekly on the day and time of your class. Our classes are kept small to allow students to have more one on one time and step by step instruction from our teachers.

Project possibilities: By the end of the course, students will have created several unique hand-built ceramic pieces that showcase their understanding of colored clay and nerikomi techniques.
